Kentucky Watershed Conservancy Districts

Thanks to the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954, Public Law 83-566 authorized the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service to collaborate with local entities to construct watershed dams aimed at flood control and resource conservation.

38 of these Watershed Conservancy Districts exist across Kentucky, and are maintained by their local county offices. Regular inspections and evaluations are conducted throughout the year to ensure the watershed dams in these areas are properly maintained. Though many are approaching or have already passed their intended lifespan.

In addition to flood control, these watershed dams also help provide recreational benefits and habitats for wild animals. They also serve as an important water supply for local residents, especially in rural communities.

Across Kentucky there are 200 NRCS Assisted Watershed Dams, and annually they are estimated to bring in $12 million in benefits to the commonwealth.
